What Is the Difference Between S355JR Steel and S355MC Steel?

S355JR steel and S355MC steel are two different structural steel materials. They have the following differences:

Material usage

S355JR steel is mainly used in general structural engineering and manufacturing fields, such as bridges, buildings and mechanical equipment. S355MC steel is a high-strength cold-formed hot-rolled steel that is widely used in the automotive industry and the manufacture of cold-formed components.

Strength level

S355JR steel usually has a minimum yield strength of 355MPa, and its tensile strength is 470-630MPa when the thickness is less than 16 mm. In comparison, S355MC steel has a higher yield strength, usually 355-510MPa, and a tensile strength of 430-550MPa.

Composition and processing

The chemical composition of these two steels is slightly different. S355JR steel contains elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus, while S355MC steel also contains trace alloying elements such as niobium, vanadium and titanium. In addition, S355JR steel is usually supplied in hot-rolled or heat-treated form, while S355MC steel is supplied in hot-rolled form and has good cold forming properties.

Conditions of use

Since S355MC steel has high strength and good cold forming properties, it is suitable for manufacturing parts that require high strength and complex shapes. S355JR steel is more suitable for general structural engineering and mechanical equipment.

What Is the Difference Between S355j2 and S355jr?

S355 is a structural grade steel that is often used in the construction and engineering industries. A large number of S355 steels are available at Masteel, but we can provide an overview of the S355JR, S355AR and S355J2/K2+N.

S355JR has a yield strength of at least 355N/mm2 and has been through the charpy impact test, which explains the JR allocation to the name as the test was carried out at 27J (Joules) at room temperature.

S355AR has the same yield strength as the S355JR, but the AR denotes it is sold in 'as rolled condition'.

S355J2/K2+N is the same steel as S355JR but it is supplied in a normalized condition and underwent a Charpy test at 40J (Joules) at -20oC.

Any steels that are put through the Charpy impact or 'V' notch test will have the letters 'J2', 'K2', 'JR' or 'JO', which denotes their material toughness.

What Is the Difference Between S355 and S355JR?

S335JR - an useful structural grade steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm². S355 being widely used in the structural engineering and construction industries, S355 offers high yield and tensile strength and is supplied with a variety of treatments and test options to ensure that it is a highly usable steel in your various projects.

S355 structural grade (S) carries minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm²m, the JR designation confirms that the steel has undergone longitudinal Chary V-Notch impact testing at 27J (Joules) at room temperature. Other Charpy designations include J0, J2 and K2.

These grades of steel are intended for structural work where no significant forming or bending must be done. These grades can be bolted, riveted and welded in a full range of structural and fabricated items including bridges, box girders, cranes and other general structural projects.

The grade designations of SANS 50025 / EN10025-2 refer to the minimum yield strength of each grade for thicknesses less than or equalto 16mm. The steel should be selected in accordance with the strength requirements. The JR, J0 & J2 suffixes refer to different impact requirements. An average impact energy value of 27 Joules must be achieved on full size specimens in the longitudinal direction in all applicable cases.

What Is the Equivalent ASME Material for S355JR?

S355JR is a non-alloy high-strength structural steel most commonly used after S235JR. With a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi, S355JR meets requirements in chemistry and physical properties similar to ASTM material A572 Grade 50. That is to say, S355JR equivalent ASTM material is A572 Grade 50.

S355JR is usually in form of an S355JR steel plate. The stated thickness for the S355JR steel plate, as retrieved by online statistics, starts from 3mm to 400mm. However, the mill edge width of the S355JR steel coil varies from 1250 mm to 1500 mm. S355JR steel sheets can be cut into different lengths. As it is provided in various other forms as well, S355JR dimensions should be verified by suppliers before purchase.
