Q: What is pipeline steel?

A: Pipeline steel is a steel material used to manufacture oil and natural gas pipeline transportation systems. Pipeline steel products include seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes, which can be divided into three types: high-cold, high-sulfur areas and submarine laying. The working environment of these pipelines is harsh, and their lines are long and difficult to maintain, so their quality requirements are very strict. The pipeline steel we use has good mechanical properties (thick wall, high strength, high toughness, wear resistance), as well as large diameter, weldability, cold resistance and corrosion resistance. Q: What are pipeline steel plates and steel coils?

A: Pipeline steel plates and steel coils were developed in the manufacture of welded OCTG pipes (line pipe or casing and tubing). Pipeline steel plates are designed to be processed into welded line pipes, including ERW, LSAW, and SSAW welding processes. API 5CT pipes can also be manufactured in welded ERW types, so pipe steel plates and coils cover these pipes as well. But api 5ct welded pipe is not always accepted, most of the time casing and tubing are accepted as seamless type. Q: What is the difference between a pipeline and a pipe?

A: Both pipelines and pipes can be used to transport various liquids, gases, and sometimes slurries and powder materials, but they do have differences. We will compare for you from the following points:

①Installation method
A pipeline is a series of straight pipes welded together over long distances. For example, China's West-East Gas Pipeline is 8,200 kilometers long. Piping is a complex network of pipes and fittings within the defined boundaries of a plant.

②Application occasions
Pipelines can run underground, above ground and underwater, such as subsea pipelines. The majority of the pipe is above ground, with few underground facilities.

③Diameter
Pipelines are mostly large diameter and carry bulk liquids or gases from one place to another, sometimes over thousands of miles. Pipes can range from ½ inch to 80 inches depending on actual needs and are generally used for short distance transportation.

④Use of equipment
In pipelines, the use of fittings is restricted. Most pump stations and valve stations use long-radius elbows and rarely use other accessories. Pipe has fewer limitations, so it has a wider range of accessories that can be used. For example, it has different uses in pipeline systems, such as changing direction, intercepting flow, branching, controlling flow size, etc. Additionally, pipelines typically use only critical equipment, such as pumps, valves, and instruments that support the system's ability to safely transport fluids over long distances. Pipes uses a diverse range of equipment such as pumps, valves, filter vessels, towers, heat exchangers and instruments to support factory production.

⑤Design specifications and standards
In the oil and gas industry, pipelines are designed according to ASME B31.4 as well as ASME B31.8. Whereas pipes are designed according to ASME B31.3, the process piping code, and in the case of power plant piping, ASME B31.1 is the electrical piping code.
